No recent topic has created more conversation or been more divisive than the introduction of gender identity into the Kindergarten through third grade curriculums of the FCPS.
Mostly misunderstood but nevertheless controversial, Critical Race Theory, or CRT, has been the subject of a number of debates in Maryland everywhere from the Maryland governor’s race to the local schools.
The academic proficiency rates for the state of Maryland for the school year ending 2021 were obtained by the Transparency in Education Program from the Maryland State Department of Education and they do not look good for Maryland and more specifically for Frederick County.
In the May meeting of the Policy Committee the Racial Equity Committee (REC) presented their most recent version of their Anti-racism policy proposal. The content included an initial 7 categories of activity the REC felt should be tracked in order to report on the outcomes by race.
Among the cuts to next year’s budget, funding that would have helped facilitate the request to video broadcast and archive the BOE Policy, Racial Equity, and Curriculum and Instruction committee meetings was voted down by the BOE on 5/18.
In the Policy Committee meeting of May 18th the newest version of the Racial Equity Committee’s Anti-Racism policy was reviewed. In that policy the definition of Racism is as follows: ”Racism is a complex system of beliefs and behaviors, grounded in a presumed superiority of the white race.”
