Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Backs Move To Transfer Decisions on Curricula Content From Local School Districts to the Maryland Department of Education
Last week on March 7, we published an article that House Bill 119 has been amended and will now require local school district compliance with the Health Education Framework as set out by the State Superintendent or lose 10% of their funding. If passed, it would result in local school districts losing all discretion to independently develop curricula and policies. It would transfer that power to the state level.
We oppose this legislation, as does the Maryland Association of the Boards of Education.
However, the state Superintendent of Schools, Mohammed Choudhury, is endorsing the legislation. For us, this is a power grab meant to ensure there is no deviation from the specific edicts of the state MSDE, the teachers’ unions, and Annapolis. With schools failing to achieve academically and parents rapidly losing power over what their children experience and learn in school this is the last thing local districts need. Help change the leadership at the state level and sign the petition here calling for the removal of Chouhdury as State Superintendent.
